The Garden Primer
Barbara Damrosch, Ray Maher
This was our first gardening book and it is still our favorite. Authoritative and easy to read/follow.
Seed to Seed
Ashworth, Suzanne
This is a fantastic guide to saving vegetable seed. It also gives a great deal of information regarding plants relationships and taxonomy.
Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties : Popbeans, Purple Peas, and Other Innovations from the Backyard Garden
Carol Deppe /
This is out of print, but worth finding if you want to play around in the vegetable garden. Awesome!
We read a lot. Gil has read hundreds of books while tending sprouts. Years of 7 day work weeks with many 16 hour days and many a Book on Tape have expanded Gil's horizons beyond Rinsing and Draining. Here are some of his favorite authors. (several years have passed.... and I have heard many hundreds more books and authors, many which I would love to suggest, but who really cares? I just don't have the time to spend writing them down here - i have to go pack some seeds =;-)
Perhaps the most prolific writer of our time, SK is not just a horror writer. His characters become like family in a way that few authors since Charles Dickens have. He writes about our times and expands our conciousness with his thought provoking plots! We have both listened to and read most of his books and NEVER have we been less than overwhelmed.
His detective - Harry Bosch - is the best since Dashiel Hammett's and Raymond Chandler's. These are wonderful books and are the best in the genre!
Not nearly prolific enough, Grisham writes so well and in such a compelling fashion that Gil listens to them time and time again to make up for the lack of titles. Certainly the best lawyer books ever, though his recent title The Painted House is a masterpiece in the genre of humanity.
Follow Dirk Pitt and his pals from NUMA as they solve amazing crimes and make other-worldly discoveries! Dirk is a flawless human who sets an unattainable example to us all. A whole lot of fun!
There are SO many more! Gil likes history as well as fiction, but why do you care? Go search amazon yourself. If you can't read for any reason - LISTEN! The only advice is this: Always listen to UNabridged books and if you want to try a cool new technology, visit audible.com and skip the tapes!
We have 2 kids who have an intense love of books. We have learned to love reading as many as 6 books every night (plus those read during the day), often the same one over and over and over and over again - and so we have a lot of suggestions. Unfortunately we have little time to do anything unrelated to sprouts, and though we certainly intend on adding to this list - it may take a long while.
Weslandia
by Paul Fleischman, Kevin Hawkes (Illustrator)
Wesley is a nerd. Like many nerds, he is clever. With a little magical help, his summer project blossoms - literally - into his own civilization dubbed, "Weslandia." This alternate world is thoroughly beguiling - even to former tormenters. A 1999 Parents' Choice® Silver Honor Winner. (Kemie Nix, Parents' Choice®).
Fairy Tales and Fantastic Stories : And, Fantastic Stories
by Terry Jones, Michael Foreman (Illustrator).
Another awesome collection of new classic fairy tales from the former Monty Pythonite and illustrated by the understandably well known Foreman.
Fantastic Stories
by Terry Jones, Michael Foreman (Illustrator)
The original awesome collection of new classic fairy tales from the former Monty Pythonite and Foreman. It is harder to find but well well worth the effort, and since amazon does all the work just go for it.
We will eventually add to this too. One of us reads a lot of non-fiction, the other listens to fictional books on tape at an alarming rate (a habit picked up during 16 hour days at the sprout factory, years ago). You guess who is who.
Ben & Jerry's Double-Dip : Lead With Your Values and Make Money
Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield
We love B+J! Their ice cream, their business model and Jerry's in-laws were, for many years, regular customers of our's at the farmer's market in Madison. This is a great book for business people interested in society.
How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend : A Training Manual for Dog Owners
New Skete Monks
We use this book to help us raise our dogs. We love dogs. If it wasn't for our first dog - Jupiter, we might still be pushing paper clips somewhere.
The Art of Raising a Puppy
New Skete Monks
This book is the puppy specific book from the same Monks who wrote the book above.

We only use the phone for emergencies.
Back in 2001 we were still using the phone. One day I was talking to a long-time customer while pushing my daughter on the swing in our backyard (this is what a mom n' pop business is like on the internet). It dawned on me that my priorities were severely messed up, so I stopped using the phone. I love to talk and I love to help, but my family would never see me if I picked up the phone again.
The very best way to contact us is through E-mail =:-)
We are quite fast and VERY thorough. We love to help.
We have been an internet only business since 2001. We are not a big corporation. We are but 2 people, mom n' pop. We decided after years of juggling our family's (kids, dogs, cats and even our own) needs, and the needs of Sproutpeople, that we had to make more time for our kids, so we stopped talking on the phone. All calls go to voice mail and have since 2001.
We are very fast to fill orders and answer e-mail, and though we wish we could make the time to talk, we just can't seem to get more minutes into a each hour. We are many years older than when we started and our days are too short and made up of too few hours to do everything. This limitation in our business has not kept us from pleasing our customers, nor from growing (as we have every year since 1993). We do what we do as well as we can, and we think we do it very well indeed.
We appreciate your business more than we can say. We ask that you use the phone for emergencies only and that you search our site for answers before e-mailing us. This site is bigger than any 4 sprout books put together, it is always available and it is free, and we know that almost all questions are answered here.
Thanks again for your patronage and your many kind words.
