The Seeds

Alfalfa

The classic American sprout. Mild nutty flavor and a wonderful crispy texture.

Amber Waves Grain Mix

Wheat, Rye, Barley, Triticale, Oats, Spelt, Kamut, Quinoa, Sesame, Millet and Amaranth

An awesome combination of grains makes this mix a nutritional extravaganza and a sweet taste treat. Very easy and quick to grow.

Beanie's Awesome Mix

Green and Red Chief Lentils, Green, Marrowfat and Yellow Peas, Beige and Brown Garbanzos and Adzukis

A seriously beautiful pastel bean mix. Our original bean combo - this was originally called Jupiter's Awesome Mix - after our (first) beloved dog, who is responsible for our move "back to the land". Our 2nd most popular bean blend of all-time!

Broccoli *

Famous for it's antioxidant content. Broccoli sprouts can contain something like 50 times the sulfurophane found in mature broccoli, by weight, so you get as much antioxidant in 1 ounce of Broccoli Sprouts as you would if you ate 3 pounds of fully grown Broccoli (These here Sproutpeople are making no health claims - we wouldn't dare - we're just quoting published research). Broccoli is a very tasty sprout - it is the fresh vegetable our 8 year old son likes best.

Our current lot of Broccoli produces the biggest Broccoli sprouts we've ever seen, and produces the finest broccoli sprouts we've ever tasted. We always look for easy and productive seed and hope to offer certified organic seed someday, but for now this is the best there is.

Variety: Green Sprouting Calabrese

Clover

Red Clover

Almost identical to Alfalfa in flavor - nutty and mild, but with a lighter green leaf. We prefer Clover to Alfalfa as it sheds it's hulls more readily and stores longer in the frig. when sprouted. We use Clover as the base for most of our gourmet Leafy mixes.

French Garden

Clover, Arugula, Cress, Radish, Fenugreek, Dill

By far our most popular Leafy Sprout blend ever. French Garden is as gourmet as sprouts get. A delectible blend of mildly sweet, tangy, bitter and peppery. It is totally perfect!

Italian Blend

Clover, Garlic, Cress

Another gourmet blend, Italian is 2nd only to French Garden in popularity. A great way to enjoy Garlic Sprouts (which cost so darn much solo) along with other tasty sprouts.

Kat Grass

Wheat, Rye, Oats and Flax

Grass for cats, salad for cats (and kittens), whatever you call it it is real! Cats need vegetable matter in their diet, just like people, and Kat Grass supplies that along with great nutrition. We even include a little Flax which is good for their coats. Many of you know that your cats need this, because they eat your house plants - that is the surest sign that your cat will love this treat. Kat Grass is grown on soil or similar medium. All you do to serve your cat is to place the container of living grass near their food dish or in some other place they'll find it.

Madison Market Mix

Peanuts, Sunflower Seeds (Hulled), Pumpkins (Hulled or Naked) and Almonds

This mix is beyond outrageous! It is a very quick mix to grow, though the resulting sprouts are not so much sprouts as "soaks" - that is, they plump up with water but produce very little (or no) root (sprout). This mix has a shorter shelf life than most sprouts - once grown it is best consumed within 48 hours, but believe us - it won't last even that long once you taste it. The shelf life issue is one of flavor not of decomposition. As a rule the Pumpkins will get a bit bitter after a few days and the Sunflowers might get a bit brownish, but we've kept it for almost 2 weeks in storage tests and found it still quite tasty. Decide for yourself - like we say - it isn't likely to go uneaten so its sort of a moot point =:-)

Mung Bean

The most common sprout on Earth, Mungs are grown and used extensively in cooking in the Far East. Perhaps the most exciting sprout to grow as it offers unique challenges. Mungs are probably the best cooking sprout there is - especially if you like Chinese food. We have some great recipes for these.

Pea Carnival

Green, Yellow, Speckled, Marrowfat, & Bill Jump Peas

A combination of every Pea we have in stock. Varies slightly depending on supply, but usually contains 5 peas. Kids like this one. When the sprouts are let grow for 4 or 5 days they will form long roots and shoots with the Pea in between. Appearently there is some fun in pulling them apart while hoding the pea in your teeth which only children truly appreciate. Maybe its a Midwestern kid thing =:->

Peasant Mix

Green, Eston, French Blue, Crimson, Black & Red Chief Lentils

If there was only one item you could get from us, Peasant Mix should be your choice. Well, it would be ours. Lentils offer everything: Lentils store forever, they are excellent nutritionally, they are easy to sprout, they taste great sprouted for 2 days or for 6 days (and all in between), they are great raw and cooked and the sprouts last for a month or more in the frig.

Russian Mix

Clover, Onion, Mustard, Dill, Fenugreek

Our personal favorite among the Alfalfa/Clover sprouts and also the oldest of these mixes. It is the perfect acompaniment to a bagel. Oddly, I used to hate sprouts (I mean Hate!) at age 19, when I (Gil) moved to San Francisco, California (from Chicago), they put sprouts on everything - including bagels. It really infuriated me. But now, I eat Russian Mix topped bagels at an alarming rate - have for years - sometimes without anything else - just a toasted bagel with Russian Mix. Moral: Never say never. =:->

San Francisco Mix

Mung, Peanut, Black, Brown and Beige Garbanzos, Green, Speckled and Bill Jump Peas, Green, French Blue, Black and Crimson Lentils, Adzuki

13 (or more) seeds mixed up to make our most popular sprout at the Dane County Farmer's Market - we sell over 100 pounds every weekend throughout the Summer to our loyal and delighted customers. The inclusion of Peanuts is the main reason that more folks are addicted to this than to any other of our sprouts. The most popular use of this mix (and many other bean sprouts) is as a snack - the majority of our customers say they eat SF Mix like popcorn or mixed nuts - straight, but we have some great recipe ideas too.

Sunflower Greens

Black Oil - in shell

Greens grown from Sunflowers are surprisingly delicious. If you you don't feel you know us well enough to believe it, just look under your bird feeder in summertime for a sorta thick stemmed plant about 4-6" tall, with 2 leaves on top. Pick it off above the soil and eat it ..... See? Great aren't they? Sunnys need to be planted on soil or similiar medium (with 20-30% Earthworm Castings to achieve their potential in flavor and vigor.

Wheat Grass

The classic power drink's source plant. Easy to grow and rejuvinating when ingested. If everyone drank this stuff the average life expectancy would jump 10 years, this is greeeaat stuff! Wheat Grass Juice is has a very intense flavor. We've been drinking it since the 1970s and have found that we enjoy it more now than ever - since we got a GreenLife Juicer we mix our grass juice with carrot and apple juice - it is delicious!

You need a special juicer to extract the nectar from this grass - it is well worth the effort! Look down this page or on our Juicer page for more info. We also have various sized growing trays to grow your crop listed on our Sprouting Device page.

Most Popular Sprout Kits

Beanginner Sprout Kit

A great way to get into bean sprouting, this kit has 1/2 pound each of our 6 most popular sprouting beans and our very own Hemp Bag sprouter.

The Beans: Beanie's Awesome Mix, Garbanzoid, Mung Bean, Pea Carnival, Peasant Mix and San Francisco Mix.

FYI: Beans yield about twice their weight in seeds, so this bunch o' Beans will produce about 6 pounds of sprouts.

Bird Basics Sprouting Kit

An Easy Sprout Sprouter and 2 pounds of your choice of Big, Middle Size, or Lil' Bird Mix.

A simple package for the bird lover. A wise bird person tells us that all of the mixes are all fine for all birds.

Broccoli Sprouting Kit

For Broccoli Lovers!
Our favorite sprouting device: The Easy Sprout Sprouter, and 1 pound of many people's favorite seed: Broccoli.*

The pound of Broccoli will produce up to ten 8 ounce crops of broccoli sprouts. We've grown thousands of pounds of sprouts from the broccoli we currently offer - it is the best we've ever had and though it is not organic, it is the best sprouting broccoli anywhere!

Broccoli is of course famous for it's antioxidant content. Broccoli sprouts contain something like 50 times the sulfurophane found in mature broccoli (ie - one 8 ounce crop has as much as 25 pounds of broccoli), but, due to a patent held by the Dr. who headed the research team under the company name Brassica Protection Partners, we can not and do not make any claims as to the benifits of Broccoli Sprouts or Greens or the seeds we sell =;-) but they are wonderfully tender and tasty - especially if you like broccoli.

Leafy Sprout Starter Kit

A great way to get into sprouting Alfalfa/Clover type sprouts.

This kit is made up of:
Our favorite and most popular sprouter - the Easy Sprout and 1/4 pound each of our 9 World Famous =;-) Alfalfa/Clover type sprouting seeds:
Alfalfa, Clover, French Garden, Italian Blend, Moo Mix, Nick's Hot Sprout Salad, Oriental Greens, Russian Mix and Spicy Mix.

Yield note: This kit will produce about 15 pounds of sprouts (8 ounces at a time) over time. Alfalfa and Clover yield between 6 and 8 times as much weight in sprouts as in seed. Cool eh?! This also means that the sprouts you produce are costing you less than 70¢ per 5 ounces (the typical weight sprouts are sold in, in stores) even with the cost of the sprouter! The Easy Sprout will last you forever so this is not only a great introduction to sprouting Leafy Sprouts it is also an introduction to the cost savings related to growing your own. Besides that, these are going to be the freshest sprouts you ever had - AND they're Certified Organic!
Sprouts are CooL!

Easy Sprout

Our favorite and, by far most popular home sprouting device, the Easy Sprout concept came to it's inventor (Gene Monson) in a dream in 1979. It is designed in such a way that air circulation (a key aspect of sprout growing) is maximized while moisture is contained (another key). Drainage is excellent, it allows sprouts to green readily and it is absolutely durable (you'd need to take a knife to it to damage it) and easy to clean to boot. This is a great choice for everyone, but is especially necessary if you are one to occasionally forget a rinse, and down right mandatory if you live in a hot/humid climate where temperatures are high along with humidity. The Easy Sprout is very forgiving and has the highest success rate of any device we've ever used. It's near perfect design was improved upon in Fall 2000 so now air circulation is improved (We hadn't thought that even possible!) and you can take it travelling too!

Buy a few so that you can stagger your crops.

Hemp Sprouting Bag

The greatest Bean and Grain Sprouter, storage device, ever. Rinse right through the bag, shake it out and hang it up to drain - it's so simple it's cool! Measures 6x8 inches and has a 2 lb. sprout capacity so you can soak up to 1 lb. of Beans or Grains for big 2 lb. crops!

Our long time supplier no longer makes these so - We are now making these ourselves! Sproutpeople brand Hemp bags! I suppose it was just a matter of time before we got into the sprouting device business =;-) Fact is - we make them better! These Hemp Bags now sprout everything - even small seeds like Alfalfa/Clover and Broccoli. When sprouting small seeds you need to pay more attention to moisture (rinse more often) as bags just don't maintain moisture/humidity as evenly as other sprouters. Just rinse more often. The work load evens out well because draining a bag is nothing - you just hang it up and let it drip - no banging, bouncing or spinning necessary.

The Hemp Bag is perfect for travel sprouting - even backpacking/camping, and it has a hidden talent: It is as a soilless Greens Device: Lay it on a plate, thoroughly moisten it and sprinkle small seeds (Alfalfa, Arugula, Clover, Broccoli, Cress, Mustard, Radish .....) on it - keep the bag moist and in a 5 - 7 days you have a crop of Micro-Greens!

SproutMaster

5x6 inch - 3 Trays/8x10 inch - 1 Tray

Sprout Master is the best Tray Sprouter we have ever seen. It is extremely durable (though not dishwasher safe) and has excellent drainage. This is THE device for growing vertical sprouts (Alfalfa/Clover which have green leaves up and roots down). It is a bit expensive but it is the best tray there is, so I suppose it is worth it.

This 5 x 6 inch version is 3 stackable levels, each level with a divider so you can grow 2 crops. As with other configurations it comes with top and bottom covers as well.

Sprout-Ease Screen Lids

for Wide Mouth Mason Jars (Set of 3)

A set of 3 colorful plastic lids for wide mouth Mason Jars, with different mesh sizes. If growing small seeds, start with the fine screen and move up to the wider mesh as the sprouts grow to allow for better drainage, improved air circulation and to provide room for hulls to escape the sprouter. The rule of thumb is to use the largest mesh you can - as long as your sprouts stay in the jar you can't go wrong =;-D

We only use the phone for emergencies.
Back in 2001 we were still using the phone. One day I was talking to a long-time customer while pushing my (then 4 year old) daughter on the swing in our backyard (this is what a mom n' pop business is like on the internet). It dawned on me that my priorities were severely messed up, so I stopped using the phone. I love to talk and I love to help, but my family would never see me if I picked up the phone again, and that's just wrong don't you think?!

The very best way to contact us is through E-mail =:-)
We are quite fast and VERY thorough. We love to help.

We have been an internet only business since 2001. We are not a big corporation. We are but 2 people, Mom n' Pop Sprout. We decided after years of juggling our family's (kids, dogs, cats and even our own) needs, and the needs of Sproutpeople, that we had to make more time for our kids, so we stopped talking on the phone. All calls go to voice mail and have since 2001.

We are very fast to fill orders and answer e-mail, and though we wish we could make the time to talk, we just can't seem to get more minutes into a each hour. We are many years older than when we started and our days are too short and made up of too few hours to do everything. This limitation in our business has not kept us from pleasing our customers, nor from growing (as we have every year since 1993). We do what we do as well as we can, and we think we do it very well indeed.

We appreciate your patronage more than we can say. We ask that you use the phone for emergencies only and that you search our site for answers before e-mailing us. This site is bigger than any 4 sprout books put together, it is always available and it is free, and we know that almost all questions are answered here.

Thanks again for your support and your many kind words.
