Notes
We're changing our Kelp Fertilizer brand due to problems with importation from Canada. Kelpman (formerly Sea Spray) is being replaced with "Saltwater Farms SeaCom PGR". The kits we sell which include kelp fertilizer will continue to include 4 oz bottles of Kelpman until we exaust our supply. The kits will go up a bit in price when they switch to SeaCom PGR. Due to the archaic nature of our site design, changing products requires a lot of time to change references and links on pages on which the product appears. So, until I complete the update, you may run into pages that say "Kelpman". some will say "Kelp Fertilizer". It is all the same - they are identical in use.
We have added another soilless growing medium: Tencel® Sure-to-Grow Pads. These are identical in use to Baby Blanket, so if you purchase STG Pads (which is what we are calling them) and look up growing instructions on our site, please follow the Baby Blanket instructions. You will be doing exactly the right thing. The pages involved will be changed to include STG Pads in time.

These bags are amazing! We have tested sprouts, fruits and veges. We had Cilantro in one of these bags for a month! Plastic bags will still do for storing your sprouts, but if you want the best - for every sprout, fruit and vegetable - try these! You know us, we don't sell stuff just to sell it - these really are awesome. The bags is widely reviewed (positively), and like we said above - our personal experience is great, so we think it is a good bet you'll be happy with them.
The manufacturer says: Most fruit and vegetables release ethylene gas after harvest. Exposure of the produce to the gas accelerates aging and ultimate deterioration. PEAKfresh ® Produce Bags remove ethylene gas to prolong the life and freshness of the produce.
Unlike ordinary plastic bags, PEAKfresh ® Produce Bags 'breathe' so that damaging gases produced by the fresh produce are removed.
PEAKfresh® bags are USA FDA approved, comply with current EU Directives and approved by Swiss, Austrian, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand Authorities.
All PEAKfresh® mineral impregnated bags are certified for packaging organically grown produce (International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements )
1. Home Gardeners: pre-cool freshly harvested produce in refrigerator for a couple of hours before storage in PEAKfresh ® Produce Bags.
2. Produce to be stored should be fresh and undamaged.
3. Use a separate bag for each type of produce. Produce must be dry.
4. Expel air from the bag and close it using the enclosed ties and store in refrigerator.
5. Storage of mushrooms and ripe bananas in PEAKfresh ® Produce Bags for more than a few days is not recommended. Do not store whole pumpkin or onions. Mushrooms should be stored in a paper bag and then into a PEAKfresh ® bag for added freshness.
6. Wash and dry bag thoroughly before re-use. Bags can be re-used for up to two months. |

Baby Blanket
Soilless Planting Medium for

| Baby Blanket is a thin (1/8 inch) pad that holds water very well and it's easy to handle. Combined with Kelp fertilizer you can grow Micro-Greens without the mess of soil. Baby Blanket is also a wonderful way to grow Grass and Greens - though you should consider Vermiculite for the bigger seeds too. See also STG Pads
Baby Blanket is organic, biodegradable and cuts easily to size to fit any container or tray. Buying it by the Linear Foot is the best deal, of course.
This is a disposable (compostable) medium. Don't try to use it again - just cut another piece or use a new pad for your next crop.

Earthworm Castings

Earthworm Castings are a necessary ingredient in the growing of Sunflower Greens. They offer more nitrogen to the growing plants which dramatically improves the quality of the crop - the Sunnys grow more rapidly, more evenly and shed their hulls more readily. Use no more than 30% worm castings in your soil or the high nitrogen content will "burn" your plants.

| A wonderful organic fertilizer gives your Grass, Greens and Micro-Greens everything they need to grow fast and strong - and delicious.
This is a concentrate. This bottle makes twice as much fertilizer as our previous kelp (Kelpman). Dilute with water and spray (if you need a sprayer, they are listed below) it on your plants, soak Baby Blanket, STG Pads or other soilless medium and even soak your seeds in it! Each 1/2 pint (8 fluid ounces) makes up to 50 gallons!
SeaCom-PGR is a liquid plant growth regulator formulated to provide a high concentration (400 ppm) of the natural plant growth hormone, cytokinin. Cytokinin, combined with the diverse micronutrients in seaweed, leads to enhanced growth, and healthier, more productive plants.
Please note: We still include Kelpman Kelp Fertilizer in the kits which include kelp. We were forced to discontinue Kelpman due to problems importing it from Canada. Both are excellent fertilizers! Please See Note

This is a great sprout tool!
A device to help you De-Hull and dry your sprouts.
We have promised this for years, and finally we have delivered. This is an extremely well made salad spinner by OXO. We have used the big version in our house for many years, but this one is perfect for a crop of sprouts. The idea is to fill the container with water, push the hulls out and then spin the sprouts dry. You will no longer have to wait for 12 hours after your final rinse/drain cycle to refrigerate. This is intended for Leafy and Brassica Sprouts as well as Greens, but will work with most sprouts and Micro-Greens.

Your basic spray bottle with a duck-like sprayer that screws on to a plastic bottle. These aren't especially durable, but they are inexpensive and they'll probably last a good long time if you're a casual grower - as you're probably sick of reading; we were professional sproutpeople for over 10 years, so we demand a lot from our eqipment, hence our concept of durable is a bit skewed - like us =;-}We offer these as a convenience - you can buy one locally - often for less, any garden supplier should have them.

| Tencel Sure To Grow (STG) pads are another soilless medium. These are a bit thicker than Baby Blanket but they function identically. The manufacturer says: Eucalyptus is used for the production of Tencel. Eucalyptus is a tree which grows very quickly and is planted in so-called "wood farms" for industrial use. There is no artificial irrigation or gene manipulation and no pesticides are used. Tencel represents an alternative to cotton. The special properties - Tencel has the strongest tenacity profile of all the cellulose fibers - and the low use of water and land all make Tencel an eco-fiber.
STG Pads look like polyester! Don't be frightened - they aren't. We were horrified when we first saw them. They work well - they are another fine planting medium.

Vermiculite

It took us almost a decade to find an alternative to soil (I'm a very stubborn sproutguy =;-) and now we have three alternatives! A LOT depends on the size of the seeds you are planting - small seeds will do well with Baby Blanket and Tencel but bigger seeds will benefit from Vermiculite. We have grown several trays of grass and all of them taste sweeter and grow fuller blades as compared to Baby Blanket or Tencel. Baby Blanket and Tencel are still the cleanest mediums and we love them, but to be honest - Vermiculite works better for us. Try them both and decide for yourself! One other thing: Vermiculite holds liqiud so well that it keeps the grass growing after you cut it, making a 2nd cutting easier than ever.
An excellent soilless planting medium, vermiculite is a mined mineral that is treated with heat which causes it to expand (Learn about Vermiculite). It resembles mica. It is clean, odorless, mold resistant and sterile, and has an almost neutral PH. Vermiculite is on the list of approved planting mediums - in the National Organic Standards. Vermiculite works very very well with liquid fertilizers (like our Kelp) due to it's amazing moisture retention and because it provides a steady release of any added fertilizers. What's more, vermiculite contributes potassium, magnesium and a number of trace elements! Vermiculite is extremely lightweight - one pound equals as much as 14 cups! We use 6 cups (3 pints) for an 11 x 22 inch tray of grass, so each unit/pound is more than enough for 2 full tray crops or 4 half-tray (11 x 11 inch) crops.

Back in 2001 we were still using the phone. One day I was talking to a long-time customer while pushing my (then 4 year old) daughter on the swing in our backyard (this is what a mom n' pop business is like on the internet). It dawned on me that my priorities were severely messed up, so I stopped using the phone. I love to talk and I love to help, but my family would never see me if I picked up the phone again, and that's just wrong don't you think?!

We have been an internet only business since 2001. We are not a big corporation. We are but 2 people, Mom n' Pop Sprout. We decided after years of juggling our family's (kids, dogs, cats and even our own) needs, and the needs of Sproutpeople, that we had to make more time for our kids, so we stopped talking on the phone. All calls go to voice mail and have since 2001.
We are very fast to fill orders and answer e-mail, and though we wish we could make the time to talk, we just can't seem to get more minutes into a each hour. We are many years older than when we started and our days are too short and made up of too few hours to do everything. This limitation in our business has not kept us from pleasing our customers, nor from growing (as we have every year since 1993). We do what we do as well as we can, and we think we do it very well indeed.
We appreciate your patronage more than we can say. We ask that you use the phone for emergencies only and that you search our site for answers before e-mailing us. This site is bigger than any 4 sprout books put together, it is always available and it is free, and we know that almost all questions are answered here.
