Gil shows off our 1st Packaged Sprouts

In December of 1995 our good friend Big Sam - the produce manager at our oldest account - Mifflin St. Co-op in Madison, WI (she was also responsible for getting us to "green" our alfalfa 2 years before), had a discussion with us about the future of natural foods. We decided at that time that bulk sprouts were not going to last and that the future lay in packaged sprouts instead. We designed labels, bought a reefer truck (with Sam's help - she found it) and commenced putting our sprouts in packages. Our profit margin sank from 80% to 45% and worst of all, we realizes we had to get a walk in cooler. Our solar powered home would not come close and the cost of adding electricity was well over 10,000 dollars, so we started planning on moving our business out of our just completed addition. Thanks Sam! =;->
