The way you sprout differs somewhat depending on the Sprouting Device you are using.

These are the directions for
The Easy Sprout.

  1. Assemble the Easy Sprout by snapping the Small Seed Insert into the bottom of the Growing Vessel.

  2. Prepare (clean) your seeds by running cool (60-70°) water through them. Hold the Growing Vessel under your faucet or use the spray attachment - run water through your seeds until the water draining from the bottom of the Growing Vessel runs clear.

  3. Place the Growing Vessel in the lowered position inside the Solid Base.
Put 2 Tablespoons of seed - or a Single Harvest pack
into the Easy Sprout Growing Vessel.
Add 1 cup cool (60-70°) water.
Mix seeds up to assure even water contact by twirling the Easy Sprout around a few times.
    Soak approx. 8-12 hours.

  4. Gently pour off excess water. You may lose a few floating seeds -- Don't worry! -
Floaters are usually seeds which are unable to sprout.
Empty the bowl of seeds into the sprouting container.
Rinse gently with cool water and drain well.
Set anywhere out of direct sunlight and at room temperature.

  5. Rinse and drain approx. every 8-12 hours for 3 days.

  6. On the 4th day relocate your sprouts to a well lighted location for greening.
(Avoid direct sun - Indirect sunlight is best. Experiment -
you will be amazed at how little light sprouts require to green up.)
Rinse and drain approx. every 8-12 hours.
Your last rinse/drain will be either at the end of day 5 or the start of day 6.
In any case you may de-hull your sprouts at that time (see below).

  7. Your sprouts will be done about the end of Day 6.
They will have green leaves (I'm sure you will recognize them).
Refrigerate your sprouts no sooner than 8-12 hours after their last rinse/drain.

De-Hulling:
Transfer the sprouts to a large bowl and fill with cool water, break up the mass
until the sprouts are swimming relatively independently -
then skim the floating hulls from the top of the water (a hand or strainer works well) and discard.
Remove the sprouts back to the sprouter.
Expect to find more hulls on the bottom of the bowl as well.

If you grow in a tray (aka flat) (like we do), and your sprouts grow straight
(leaves up - roots down), you can de-hull by holding the tray at an angle
under the faucet (or sprayer) and “shave” the hulls off the top.
You may de-hull as above, but we don’t.

Tidbits of sprout know how:

These seeds will produce approximately 6-8 times their weight in sprouts.

These seeds remain vital for about 18 months after harvest (if stored at room temperature).
See our Seed Storage page for specifics.
They are generally harvested in September, so if you purchase fresh seed every January -March
you should have great seeds to sprout with all the time.
You may store your seed in the freezer - which will extend your seeds shelf life to at least 3 years.
If you do freeze - be sure to return the seeds you're not sprouting to the freezer asap
so as to avoid condensation.

The Basics

Rinsing: Water is the key ingredient in sprouts. Use it liberally.
Draining: It is essential that sprouts be drained thoroughly after rinsing.
Sitting in a puddle is not good.
Air Circulation: The least known of the necessities.
If your sprouts cannot breathe while growing - they can rot.
Cleanliness: The sprouting device should be washed well between crops. Dilute bleach is good.
Storage: These sprouts will keep 7-21 days in your refrigerator but fresher is better.
