Grains are a quick sprout, taking as little as 24 hours and no more than 2 or 3 days to produce a finished sprout. If you let large grains (wheat, barley, rye, etc.) grow for several days they produce grass. Grains are all sweet, though some more than others. Kids love them because of their sweetness. They can be used in breads, as a cereal, in stir-frys or as a snack - or anything else you can imagine. Oats + Groats and Amber Waves make a fantastic super nutritious breakfast - top with some fruit, nuts, milk, maple syrup....anything - you won't believe how great grain sprouts can be!

Sprouting Grains
All of the seeds on this page are supplied by sources Certified Organic.

Amaranth

An ancient grain which is the smallest seed of all is also one that you do not even soak. They appear water repellant but just rinse and drain for a few days and these microscopic seeds sprout tiny sprouts.

An awesome combination of grains makes this mix a nutritional extravaganza and a sweet taste treat. Very easy and quick to grow. A great breakfast cereal - add some dried fruit and dig in!

Barley - Hulless
Purple and/or White

A quick sprout which is a bit less sweet than other grain sprouts. This hulless grain is great for sprouting and can also be used to grow grass (though we recommend Whole Barley, found on our Grass page for that).
We carry Purple and/or White Barley. When we have both we mix them. We always sell the best sprouting seed we can get our hands on regardless of color, though we are very fond of purple.

Buckwheat Groats

These are hulled Buckwheat (Groat actually means "a hulled seed"). They are one of the quickest sprouts around - soak 'em for 1/2 hour, rinse a few times and you have sprouts in about 24-48 hours. They are nutty, plump and extremely tender. A great snack!

Corn

Blue & Yellow Corn

We use Corn in our Bird Mixes, but we no longer sell it straight. We never eat it ourselves - it is tough and chewy. Corn can be steamed, but we didn't like that either. We offered Corn because we had it, and because it is written about in finer sprouting books - and the seed is Beautiful, but we no longer feel it a good offering. Corn will remain in Big Bird Mix.

Kamut®

Kamut is an ancient grain which is now a patented product. The story we have heard is this: A farmer from Montana, while serving in Northern Africa during WWII, found some grain seeds. He brought the seeds back to the family farm and after years of raising the crop, applied for and was given a patent. Whatever is the case, this is a truly awesome grain! It is bigger than wheat and slightly less sweet as well as more tender.

High quality sprouting Kamut® is sometimes difficult to find, so get some while you can. This lot of seed is very beautiful - and it sprouts wonderfully!

Millet

A small beautiful round shiny seed, Millet is great in breads, as a mildly crunchy addition to salads or anything else you can think of.

Oats - Hulless

These are hulless Oats - they are a very fast sprout and are a wonderfully tender grain with a mild sweetness.

They ARE grown with NO hull.
They are NOT hulled. They are NOT groats. They are NOT heated in ANY way.
They ARE raw.

Keep scrolling - there are more seeds and mixes down the page..........

Breakfast Sprouts?! It's about time!!!

Top these sprouts with milk (cow, soy, rice...) and a little maple syrup and you have the perfect breakfast. It has been a very long time since we ate breakfast with any regularity, but this has changed our lives. Oats + Groats is delicious (the maple syrup doesn't hurt either =;-) and has a great soft crunchy texture. One-half cup of this "cereal" provides a great delicious nutritious start to your day - it is a "no brainer", try it and see.

Oats + Groats is a quick sprout (soaks for 1 hour and rinses once after the soak and once again 8-12 hours later. It is sprouted and done 8-12 hours after that.) which is the best thing we have concocted in years!

Oats are in VERY short supply - so the price is very high. This has been the case with hulless oats for years now.

Quinoa

An ancient grain which has been cultivated for over 5000 years! It is the quickest of all sprouts, prefering to soak for only 30 minutes and showing 2 roots per seed within 24 hours. Pronounced "Keen Wa". This is the only sprout which contains every single amino-acid. It is very beautiful as well as delicious.

Rice

We offer 4 types of Rice: Short Grain Brown, Wehani - an absolutely gorgeous rice called for in raw food cookbooks, Red Thai and Wild.

Short Grain Brown produces only a bulging germ - as opposed to a sprout - after 2 or 3 days, but cooks up more quickly and has greater nutritional benefit (like all sprouts - yes, even when cooked sprouts are more nutritious). Short grain is the only way to go when sprouting brown rice as the seed is more likely to be intact (un-broken). Brown Rice must be cooked - it just is not tender enough to eat as a raw sprout (for most people).

Wehani is a spectacular aromatic mahogany long grain rice with a savory, musky, nut-like flavor. Really gorgeous, Wehani is listed in several Raw Food cookbooks. Even if you just want a rice to cook, Wehani is a great new choice!

Red Thai is perhaps the best sprouting rice we've ever seen. It has a wonderful flavor and is very similar to Wehani in appearance.

Wild Rice is all together different. It is too long a grain to survive intact through all the shipping it encounters; between the farmer and you, but though it has a higher percentage of broken seeds than other seeds we sell, it soaks up water readily and - to us - is the most edible of raw sprouted rices.

Rye

Another sweet grain sprout. Easy to grow. Great in breads, as a snack or best of all as the basis of Rejuvelac. The lot of Rye we currently have in stock is by far the most vigorous we've ever seen!

Spelt - Hulled

This is one seed which we carry only occasionally. A great alternative for those allergic to Wheat. This is Hulled and so is inconsistent as a sprout since some lots have more damaged seeds than others. Like any seed, it can be eaten as soon as it is soaked (8-12 hours) - when it has become Alive.

This years Spelt is great! It is the best we've had in many years. It won't last long, so get it while you can @:-)

Triticale

A grain developed not too many years ago, Triticale is a combination of Wheat and Rye, so it is sweet and easy to grow. It was originally thought to be a solution to world hunger as it is easy for farmers to grow in most parts of the world and it is - of course - very nutritious.

Wheat

Hard (uusually Red) Winter

Amazingly sweet, Wheat is a quick and easy sprout favored by children and adults alike. Snack on it, grind it and throw a bunch into homemade breads, add to stir frys or salads. We carry Hard Red Winter Wheat as it has the longest shelf life. This is the same seed used to grow grass.

We only use the phone for emergencies.
Back in 2001 we were still using the phone. One day I was talking to a long-time customer while pushing my (then 4 year old) daughter on the swing in our backyard (this is what a mom n' pop business is like on the internet). It dawned on me that my priorities were severely messed up, so I stopped using the phone. I love to talk and I love to help, but my family would never see me if I picked up the phone again, and that's just wrong don't you think?!

The very best way to contact us is through E-mail =:-)
We are quite fast and VERY thorough. We love to help.

We have been an internet only business since 2001. We are not a big corporation. We are but 2 people, Mom n' Pop Sprout. We decided after years of juggling our family's (kids, dogs, cats and even our own) needs, and the needs of Sproutpeople, that we had to make more time for our kids, so we stopped talking on the phone. All calls go to voice mail and have since 2001.

We are very fast to fill orders and answer e-mail, and though we wish we could make the time to talk, we just can't seem to get more minutes into a each hour. We are many years older than when we started and our days are too short and made up of too few hours to do everything. This limitation in our business has not kept us from pleasing our customers, nor from growing (as we have every year since 1993). We do what we do as well as we can, and we think we do it very well indeed.

We appreciate your patronage more than we can say. We ask that you use the phone for emergencies only and that you search our site for answers before e-mailing us. This site is bigger than any 4 sprout books put together, it is always available and it is free, and we know that almost all questions are answered here.

Thanks again for your support and your many kind words.
